Thomas Higgins

Thomas Higgins, son of Linville HIGGINS & Judea KIRBY, was b. Nov. 28, 1826, in NC, and died Feb. 20, 1918, in Alleghany Co., NC. He married Sarah "Sally" Cheek, daughter of Chesley CHEEK & Phebe WOODRUFF, Feb. 20, 1851, in Ashe Co., NC. She was born Apr. 20, 1832, in Ashe Co., NC, and died July 14, 1910, in Alleghany Co., NC. Sarah and Thomas are buried at the Chesley Cheek Cemetery, Vox community, Alleghany Co., NC.

Sarah "Sally" Higgins was the oldest child of Chesley and Phebe (Woodruff) Cheek. Sally Cheek and Thomas Higgins posted a marriage bond in Ashe County, NC, on Feb. 20, 1851. They lived in the Crab Creek area of northeastern Alleghany County.

Thomas & Sarah Higgins are buried at the Chesley Cheek Cemetery, located in the Vox community of Alleghany Co., NC. Their birth and death dates are from their gravestones. (See Alleghany Cemeteries Through 1986, pub. by the Alleghany Co. Hist.-Gen. Society.)

1865-1866. Thomas HIGGINS & Sarah HIGGINS signed 5 deeds which divided up the land belonging to Sarah's deceased father, Chesley Cheek, between her mother Phebe, brothers Richard and William Cheek, and unmarried sisters Gilley, Lucinda and Elizabeth Cheek. (Alleghany Co., NC, DB A-1, pp. 187, 212, 231, 246, 247, dated July 15, 1865, Nov. 21, 1866, & Nov. 22, 1866.)  Thomas & Sarah did not take any of Chesley's land, but they received payment from the others for their share of the estate.
