Aaron Ashley Johnson
& Sarah Joines

Aaron Ashley Johnson, son of Benjamin JOHNSON & Tena WALKER, was born Feb. 8, 1843, in Wilkes Co., NC, and died Jan. 1, 1921, in Alleghany Co., NC.  He married (1) Sarah Joines, abt. 1859.  She was probably the daughter of Ezekiel JOINES & Pheraby CAUDILL of Wilkes Co., NC.  She was born Sept. 29, 1835, in Wilkes Co., NC, and died Mar. 27, 1895, in Grayson Co., VA.  He married (2) Frances Lucinda "Fannie" Caudill, possibly the daughter of Thomas B. CAUDILL & Martha JOINES (verification needed), abt. 1895.  She was born Feb. 22, 1875, and died July 31, 1931, in Alleghany Co., NC.  Sarah Joines Johnson is buried at the Johnson Family Cemetery on Rte. 632, Grayson Co., VA (stones were moved to Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Alleghany Co., NC).  Aaron Ashley Johnson was buried "on the farm" according to his death certificate; believed to be the same location as his 1st wife Sarah.  His 2nd wife, Fannie Caudill Johnson, is buried at the Martin Crouse Cemetery, Road 1123, Alleghany Co., NC.

Notes

Aaron Ashley Johnson, according to his death certificate, was the son of Benjamin JOHNSON and Tena WALKER.  The death certificate also reveals that he was born Feb. 8, 1843, in Wilkes County, NC, died Jan. 1, 1921, in Alleghany County, and was buried "on the farm."  This probably means the Johnson Family Cemetery on Route 632 in Grayson County, VA, between the Little River and the state line.  His gravestone, however, has not been found.  The stones from this small family cemetery were moved to the Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Alleghany County, NC.

There are two Benjamin Johnson households in the 1850 census of Wilkes Co., NC.  Neither has a wife named Tena or a son named Aaron or Ashley.  However, there is an Allen Johnson, age 7, listed on page 284 of the census in the household of Benjamin Johnson (age 72).  This might be Aaron, with his name mispelled.  Benjamin might be Benjamin Johnson, born Sept. 15, 1777, who was a son of Thomas JOHNSON, Sr. (1729-1786) of Wilkes Co., NC.  His age is right; however, more research is needed.  It's possible that the two boys in Benjamin Johnson's household in 1850 ("Allen" age 7, and Theophilus, age 8) could be sons from a marriage to a much younger wife, or grandsons whose parents had died.

A family Bible in the possession of A.A. Johnson's descendants in Oklahoma identifies his wife as "Sally Jane JOINS."  (Information kindly provided by Nola Johnson.)  I suspect that Sarah was very likely the daughter of Ezekiel JOINES & Pheraby CAUDILL of Wilkes Co., NC.  In the 1860 census, Aaron JOHNSON (age 17) and wife Sarah (age 22) are listed in Trap Hill, Wilkes Co., NC, on page 28 of the census (HH#199).  Ezekiel Joines is listed on the very next page (HH#207), which suggests the families lived in close proximity.  In addition, A.A. and Sarah Johnson gave two of their sons the rather distinctive names "Major F." and "Shadrack F."—names which are also found in Ezekiel Joines' family.

A.A. Johnson's second wife, Frances Lucinda CAUDILL, might be the daughter of Thomas B. CAUDILL & Martha JOINES of Wilkes Co., NC.  They had a daughter named Frances L. born abt. 1872 according to the 1880 census.  Although Frances Lucinda Caudill Johnson's gravestone indicates she was born Feb. 22, 1875, census records suggest she was actually born around 1872, so her age is consistent with the 1880 census record.  Thomas B. Caudill's wife Martha Joines was the sister of A.A. Johnson's first wife Sarah Joines.  In other words, their daughter Frances L. Caudill would have been A.A. Johnson's niece by marriage.  Need to locate the marriage record of A.A. Johnson & Frances Lucinda Caudill (probably in Wilkes Co., NC) to prove or disprove this link.
