George Washington Nichols, Sr., was born Mar. 12, 1818, in Virginia, and died May 19, 1885, in Alleghany Co., NC. He married Mary Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Richard Clifford EDWARDS, Sr. & Mary "Polly" FENDER, abt. 1844. She was born May 8, 1821, in Ashe Co., NC, and died Dec. 22, 1900, in Alleghany Co., NC.  George W. Nichols, Sr., and Elizabeth Nichols are buried at the Nichols Cemetery on Road 1121, Alleghany Co., NC.

George Washington Nichols, Sr., was born in Virginia in 1818, but his parents have not been identified. George Nichols was a blacksmith and a farmer according to Alleghany County Heritage (1983), p.344, article no. 527 by Lou Nichols Bennett. In 1863, George NICHOLS bought 113 acres on the Little River in Grayson County, VA, for $400. He and his family lived there until 1877 when they moved back to Alleghany County and settled on land about 2 miles south of Sparta. (Alleghany County Heritage (1983), p.344.)
