Notes

Alleghany County, NC

Morgan Bryan was the oldest son of Francis Bryan & Phoebe Woodruff of Ashe (Alleghany) County, NC.  He married Susan HALE, a daughter of William Hale and Lucy Stone of Grayson County, VA.  According to B.F. Nuckolls, Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County Virginia (1914), "Their first son, Shadrack, was also a Methodist Minister; he married Sallie BRYANT, his cousin; they have sons and daughters.  Second son, Gideon, died single.  First daughter, Lucy, married Henderson CHEEK; they have sons and daughters.  Second daughter, Sarah, married Archibald EDWARDS."

Morgan Bryan appears to have been a successful farmer and businessman.  In the 1860 census, he had 13 slaves and land valued at $10,000.  Some land records refer to him owning a saw mill or mills.  He lived to be 86 years old and his estate was probated in Alleghany Co., NC, in 1882.  (NC Archives Box No. C.R.004.508.3; Alleghany Co., NC, Will Book A, p.152.)

Dr. A.B. Cox wrote in Footprints in the Sands of Time (1900), "Morgan Bryan was a practical farmer and earnest local Methodist preacher.  He married Miss Susan HALE, an amiable, good christian lady."
